How are different types of soil affected by erosion? 

      The different types of soil affected by erosion are that if you have small, medium or large soil particles without humus, then more erosion will happen, but if you have small, medium and large soil particle with humus, then the humus/vegetation will keep the water from eroding most of the soil. The smaller the particle the more erosion there would be. For example if there are small particle soils and a stream comes, the stream will take many of the soil because there was no humus to retain the soil from flowing away.

 

 What type of soil is typically found in the Huasteca? 

      The type of soil mostly found on the Huasteca grounds is a large particle soil. Mostly pebbles and small rocks as the ground. There is actually not that much of soil, when you walk there you mostly see pebbles and rocks. This soil may be called a loamy soil, and if you get a shovel and try to dig, you will mostly get out many pebbles/rocks.

 

Describe the positives and negatives of using the soil already in the Huasteca for building.

      Some of the positives of using the big soil particles are that there is less erosion, this type of soil is easy for building and planting vegetation. Also, that floods are less likely to happen when it rains. Some negative things of this type of soil  is that water flows fast through this type of soil, pebbles are more likely to move with the currents when it rains. Also the pebbles eroded can cover the street making transportation difficult.

 

What type of soil is needed to construct structures on Huasteca land to prevent weathering, erosion, and flooding as much as possible?

      A type of soil that is needed to construct in this type of land is a loamy type of soil. This soil is one of the best soil to work with because it is easy to move and build on. Also, this soil has a strong granular structure that prevents the water from weathering and eroding it to tiny pieces. In this particle water is retained causing the particles to move less, so less erosion happen.

 

How will soil type affect any greenery you try to plant (i.e. grass for a soccer field)?  

      Each soil type affects the growth of each type of plant. It depends on the soil and also depends on the types of plants. If the soil is not appropriate for the plant, then the plant won’t grow. For example, if you are doing a soccer field of real grass, then you would want to have a type of soil that has rich nutrients and drains well and does not retain that much water that the grass would die.

 

How will you need to space your buildings to allow for drainage, etc?

      We will need to dig under the buildings in order to have some tubes were the water can go through and not disturb the rivers natural path. We will need to space the building and consider the small canals so that when we construct, we have a hole/space between the building so that the river can go through their natural path without any disruptions. This spaces will help the environment keep the way it is and also the building by making the building stay up and not collapse.

 

How will the factor (river) that caused the canyon formation potentially affect people?

      Rivers or any other factors form canyons can affect the people because sometimes there are earthquakes that the people near the formation could feel. In other words if the river that comes from the canyon, erodes bringing many weathered rock material and water, it can cause trouble to people that live near the Santa Catarina river or any other factor that is used to do a canyon formation. Also, the canyon was formed by a big strong river, that connects a long way through the city. If a river starts to gain it’s water with fast currents and is big, it will causes damage to the city.

 

What effect will rock types have on development? 

      The rock type doesn't matter because eventually the rock would be weathered and eroded. So first we would need to control the land and its rocks, so that there would be no weathering and erosion. For example, if there is a busy campsite where people are their all day, and then the mountains are weathered and are eroded and lastly deposited on the campsite. Then the development will be affected because the campers will have a difficult time sleeping due to the rocks and also a hard time being in the camp.

 

How could weathering and erosion potentially impact development and activities in the canyon? 

      The weathering and erosion processes can destroy the activities or the development. The agents of erosion can cause problems or also the weathering because if it breaks into smaller pieces then the activities could change or not be working. For example, since most of the rocks in the Huasteca are limestone the houses built there where the people live are made of the limestone rock. If one day acid rain comes the houses that are there can chemically weather up and create steam or bubbles that would make many damages and not being able to live there if it causes many problems. Another example is that the hikers climb the mountains and if weathering happens the rocks will break into smaller pieces and then they would have a lot of trouble hiking.

 

What impact could people have on the current geological features of the canyon?

      Due to the mountains and valleys located in the Huasteca a negative impact is that when it rains, the water from the mountains accumulate on the valleys and form a huge river with a big force that can destroy buildings and land in its paths. This accumulation of water can cause floods and destruction of homes of the people who live in those canyons. A positive impact could be that the beautiful and unique features of the Huasteca impacts the people in an economical way, because of the tourists and people who go their for adventure and fun.

 

Do you believe it is important to preserve these features?  Give three important reasons why or why not.

      We believe it is important to preserve this features because if we have them it can cause flooding or damages of people living in the canyon but at the same time some economical advantages can happen and the people could be happy at the same time it is happening or even after. For example people who go and sell food their get an economical benefit. To add on, the monarch butterflies are really important to the features because since they move to many places the features there is, are different every time, and it would be best for them if we keep this features the way they are. Lastly, the people who enjoy doing exercise or they like adventure the features for them are important and if the mountains were not there the people wouldn’t go and do exercise there, because then there would be no unique features at all.

 

What effect will the development have on the surrounding environment?

      Depending on the structure we build, anything that is constructed will affect the environment one way or another. But one structure affecting less or more than others. The effect that it will have on the environment is that when we build the structure during the building process the machines noise will disturb the animals that live their. When the development is done, the humans that will use the development will affect the environment with the trash and waste that they will leave behind. The lights in the development will affect the animals at night and disturb their sleep and natural environment.
